I have a dealer friend who purchased an 1889 $3 gold piece and a 1926 Sesquicentennial quarter eagle. Both of these coins were counterfeit. Both were good sliders and were purchased along with many other various gold coins. Neither had any appearence of being counterfeit. Both are made of gold, (not sure of mixture yet), both have the correct weight, diameter, and thickness.
This is an interesting topic with varied opinions. Where do "old" coins stop and "modern" coins start. Should grading companies adhere to the same guidelines regardless of age? For instance, should an MS-69 Kennedy Half and an MS-69 Franklin Half be held to the same standard? The conversation is ongoing at Coin Community. Please, join in.
Well don't! This discussion started back in April and is still going strong. It started out simple enough with a photo of a coin asking for opinions on whether or not it was cleaned. Pretty cut and dry right? Nope, 2 1/2 months and 100 replies later this is still a hot topic. Come join us and see how you are at spotting cleaned coins. Plenty of great photos and opinions.
The Home Shopping Network is selling some 2005 uncirculated sets that were graded by PCG with a designation of SP. Short for Satin Proof. They say that it follows the Sheldon grading system but was made to 'adjust' for the new coins. Some questions arise though. Since the planchets aren't polished and the dies, with the exception of being bead blasted, are not different and are not rotated out like proof dies are, how could these be considered proof coins? Can the grading companies come up with a new system? Or is this just for the money? There is a discussion going on about this at Coin Community. We love to here your opinion.
There's a new grading company on the scene. Gallery Grading Company. There's not much information available about them, but there are a couple of eBay sellers that are selling their graded coins. Coin Community members have dug up some information on them and have a discussion going right now.
