Anacs getting "new" slabs?         Thursday, October 27, 2005

Posted by national dealer

Rumors have been floating around about Anacs moving to a "new and improved" slab. I have not heard directly from Mr. Taylor, but many others are spreading the word that he has in fact stated that by the FUN show, we could see new holders. Of course, I would love to see normal size holders with the intercept shield like those used by his old company ICG. Anyone else hear of this rumor?

Anybody see Beth Deisher's editorial about the ANA?         Tuesday, October 25, 2005

Posted by national dealer

The last quote is what I love best.

"Unless and until more light is shed on this situation, ANA members and the collecting public in general should seriously question whether they could continue to support the organization".

This quote is directed at the ousting of governor Ostromecki. There are some hard facts quoted in her editorial about the "executive session". Seems as if many of the decisions made in the ANA are now being done behind closed doors. The guest commentary written by Anthony Tumonis also questions the ANA about signing on for the Las Vegas show. His quote is "Sure the ANA is receiving a lot of money from this show's promoters, but that doesn't make it right".

Seems as if more and more people are unhappy with the ANA these days.

ANA Board Member Removed         Wednesday, October 19, 2005

Posted by SFDukie

The Board of Governors votes Ostromecki out of office. In an unprecedented action Oct. 14, Walter Ostromecki Jr., a newly elected, first-term governor of the American Numismatic Association, was removed from office by a vote of the ANA governing board during a meeting in executive session at ANA headquarters. From CoinWorld headlines.

Anyone know why?

Ridiculous Rumor         Tuesday, October 18, 2005

Posted by Kyra

Here's one for the dumb story files! My boss was trying to tell me today that the Mint is recalling all of the 2005 Buffalo nickels. Supposedly someone complained that the buffalo is too "anatomically correct" ("You can see it's 'dingy'" he said), so the coins are being recalled. He swears up and down that his wife, who works at another bank in town, was told by her boss to round up all the Buffalo nickels to ship back. He was trying to get me to search for Buffalos in our loose coin, I laughed for a good hour when he told me why! Anyone else heard this one?

100 Point Coin Grading System?         Friday, October 14, 2005

Posted by longnine009

Could it be that the third party grading companies really don't believe 100 point grading would fly but by kicking the idea around and never adopting it, perhaps it makes people more amiable towards 11 uncirculated grades. Or perhaps they think it does. Kind a like a play on "bad cop, good cop." ?

Is it just me or does this idea get kicked around every time there is a spike in collector rage against grading--like right now with the '74 aluminum cent?

What's your opinion on Dansco & Intercept Albums?         Sunday, October 09, 2005

Posted by Shatsi

I know lot of you use Dansco albums. Recently I was told that Intercept Shield albums are better than Dansco in terms of stopping toning. Intercept albums provide better protection with a special tarnish preventing sheet between each page. I would like to know your opinion on this. Currently I'm using air tights but I would like to have them in an album

If something happens to you, what happens to your coins?         Saturday, October 08, 2005

Posted by Grovey

Just had this conversation with my wife. She is not interested in coins. I can be okay with that, I told her I want her to have a basic clue of how to read a slab and what the coin is. It is also one of the reasons I try and buy certified coins as all the guesswork is done and all she would have to do is get current price guide, upload pictures and list the description on the slab.

I watched my Mother look so lost when my Father died. She did not know where everything was. bills, finances etc. I would just like Tracey to be prepared and semi-educated. She said are you planning on dying? I said well unless you know something I don't. Yes, eventually.

Anyone else ??

American Communist Coins         Friday, October 07, 2005

Posted by Rggoodie I was asked this week about the hammer and sickle on the Kennedy half dollar, after a little research- Here is the info on the Kennedy Half and the Roosevelt dime. Communist Symbols on American Coins Since the end of the Second World War, people worried about a Communist takeover of the United States. This reached a fever pitch during the 1950s with the McCarthy Senate Hearings on Communism in the government and entertainment industry. After President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, a new conspiracy theory surfaced. Claims were that markings on the U.S. dime and half-dollar indicated that the Communists had infiltrated the government. Roosevelt dime President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was considered extremely liberal, due to his social programs of the Great Depression of the 1930s. During World War II, the United States allied with the Soviet Union to fight the Nazis. Roosevelt ignored many warnings about Stalin and the Soviets and gave America excessive aid to fight the Germans. After Roosevelt passed away, a dime was minted with his likeness. Upon examining the coin, people noticed a small "JS" near the base of his neck. To many people, these initials stood for Josef Stalin and proved that Roosevelt had been on the take from Stalin. Since the initials are still on the dime today, some think it is an indication that Communists to run the government now and want to continue to commemorate Stalin. Kennedy half dollar After John F. Kennedy was assassinated, a the half dollar coin was minted in his honor. People noticed that at the base of his portrait, there was a symbol that appeared to be a hammer and sickle, which was the symbol of Communism and was also seen on the Soviet flag. Since Kennedy was considered a liberal, this Communist symbol--along with Stalin's initials on the Roosevelt dime--served to prove that the Communist were on the verge of taking over the country, by infiltrating the government and U.S. Mint. The FACTS Although rumors spread about a Communist take over, saner people realized that coins have the signature of the person who designed them. JS were the initials of John Sinnock, who designed the Roosevelt dime. The hammer and sickle was really a script rendition of the letters GR for Gilroy Roberts, who designed the Kennedy half dollar. The conspiracy theory that the Communists had put their signature on U.S. coins is FALSE.

Let's all share some pictures...Show me what you collect!!         Thursday, October 06, 2005

Posted by Becky I fell in love with Morgans a long time ago. I still love them, but have branched out to VAMs and a type set. I also love the Darkside as you can tell from my avatar. I'm a "no real focus" collector, if I like it, and I can afford it, I buy it. Come share some photos with us!
